Color of Time

Discover the quiet beauty of aged paper and the subtle “color of time.” Through the Abstraction by Design (AbD) process, you’ll explore the natural tones of oxidized materials—pale yellows, warm ochres, deep browns—using a deliberately limited palette of white paper, black and white paint, graphite, and polyurethane.

This focused approach heightens awareness of balance, composition, and tonal nuance. Participants are encouraged to bring their own collection of aged papers—old newsprint, maps, letters, or book pages—each bearing the marks of time.

The act of gathering and creating becomes a meditation on transformation, revealing how less can truly let us see and say more.

SQUARED

Grids Lines Patterns

Corner to Corner

This workshop focuses on  the square format as we explore grids, lines and patterns corner to corner to create mixed media artwork using the AbD method and introducing SbD Subtraction by Design, the Peel to Reveal technique. Let’s have some fun as we choose colors, textures and layout within the square.

Abstraction by Design

Application: The Abstraction by Design method is a mixed media process in which one applies paper and paint to panels in simultaneous layers. We build up a surface that enables one to sand, scrape, saturate, peel, paint, collage and repeat multiple times to create textured workable surfaces.

Acrylic urethane/varnish is used as both a glue and a top coat and house paint as our materials

Design:

The design approach is based on the A R R practice of Action. Review. React

We focus on exploring the fundamentals of color and material selecting, color mixing, composition and balance.

AbD WORKSHOP ASHEVILLE NC. Linear Thinking

Linear Thinking

Join me at UP Market Gallery in Asheville in Sept 2026

Expand your practice through the art of working in sequence. In this workshop, we use the Abstraction by Design (AbD) method to explore multiple series-based formats across connected panels. The first challenge is yours: choose your format. Will you create sets of diptychs or triptychs? Maybe a 4-panel series or commit to a full 8-panel linear installation? It’s your call, with the goal of creating cohesive series in tailored formats using the Abstraction by Design method of layering paint and collage, and rebuilding surfaces. You’ll push each format to its limits. Along the way, you’ll explore rhythm, balance, and color, discovering how panels speak to one another in sequence.                                                                              Think in series. Create in flow. Build dialog panel by panel

     AbD-Abstraction by Design

Abstraction by Design (AbD) is a mixed media method rooted in the layered interplay of paper and paint applied directly to panel surfaces. Through simultaneous application, artists create a foundation that explores sanding, scraping, saturating, peeling, collaging, and repainting, often in repeated cycles. This process encourages experimentation and embraces unpredictability. Wet and dry techniques are often used side-by-side, allowing for dynamic, textured surfaces to emerge organically.

Power of 12

I am looking forward to returning to Woodward Contemporary in San Diego to lead another workshop in the Abstraction by Design Method. Join me in this high production Workshop.

Create a cohesive body of work across twelve 12”x12” panels in this fast-paced, mixed media workshop. Designed for artists ready to push both quality and quantity. This workshop activates your creative flow through structured repetition, intuitive response, and decisive editing. Power of 12 takes you into high-production mode—where design, composition, and creative decision-making happen in real time.                                   You’ll move through pivotal AbD processes: layering paint and paper, scraping, sanding, wetting, gluing, peeling, and sealing—cycling through these actions to build surface depth and compositional clarity.

Production Line

This workshop transforms your creative energy into momentum. You’ll move swiftly through multiple stages of development, treating your panels as a unified series while allowing space for variation and surprise. Each artist determines the orientation, sequencing, and visual relationships between the panels—establishing rhythm, contrast, and cohesion. This format of 12 panels offers a dynamic opportunity to explore multiple configurations—rows (6 over 6), stacked (3 over 4), vertical columns, diptychs, triptychs, or a full linear installation. The result is a flexible body of work that can be installed in numerous ways.

       Abstraction by Design

Abstraction by Design (AbD) is a mixed media method rooted in the layered interplay of paper and paint applied directly to panel surfaces. Through simultaneous application, artists create a foundation that invites sanding, scraping, saturating, peeling, collaging, and repainting—often in repeated cycles. This tactile process encourages experimentation and embraces unpredictability. Wet and dry techniques are often used side-by-side, allowing for dynamic, textured surfaces to emerge organically.

WORKSHOP San Diego, Quietly Upscale

  • Woodward Contemporary (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Join me and let’s work together as we learn and practice the AbD techniques on large scale panels while focusing on quieting our work.

Upscale: In this workshop we expand our surface dimensions as we upscale to large and mid size cradled panels

Quietly: As the cliche suggests “Less is More”.. So, Let’s keep it simple. To accomplish this approach and keep our work quiet (not busy) requires discipline in our creative process  from start to finish.

We focus on this discipline by pre- designing, pre mixing and pre- selecting our materials and colors. We then segue by referencing visual triggers, inspiring images, personal notions and ideas of color and composition.

Referencing visual triggers and pre-editing at the very beginning of our project acts as a regulator, encouraging one to keep it simple by guiding us to selectively add and remove color, lines, forms and shapes incrementally and with purpose to create quiet abstract compositions. In other words we simplify the creative process by setting a quiet disciplined approach to the work.

JURIED SHOW SUBMISSION (JUROR, SHEM)

STILLPOINT: THE ART OF QUIET COMPOSITION

Saint Louis Artist Guild invites artists to submit work that interprets the theme : Stillpoint: The Art of Quiet Composition.

This juried exhibition explores balance, simplicity and a measured minimalistic approach in creating abstract art. A quiet composition might manifest itself through limited color palettes, simple shapes , and an emphasis on both the positive and negative spaces (surfaces). The spaces within the composition become as important as the content itself and encourages a deeper engagement from both artist and viewer, reflective of a visually meditative experience.

Overall, a Quiet Composition is about finding beauty in simplicity, stillness and balance.

Artists are encouraged to interpret A Quiet Composition broadly and in their own distinctive voice, using a variety of artistic mediums including: mixed media, painting, collage & photography.

WORKSHOP Asheville NC 3 over 3

  • Up Market Gallery (map)

Join me at UP MARKET Gallery in Asheville for an AbD 3 OVER 3 workshop.

What is a 3 over 3 workshop?

The easy explanation is 3x3= 9. That’s right, in this workshop, we work on, create on, and produce a 9-panel installation.

Whatever your style quiet, LOUD, bold, subtle or somewhere in between, find your voice creating an installation of abstracts that talk to one another.

Our goal is this:

Design & compose an abstract motif with color, shape and texture. Apply this motif individually to all nine panel’s and create a dialog for all panels to work in concert. This parameter allows us to fully focus on our design and composition skills, while creating a symbiotic interplay between all nine panels. The result is a completed body of work and a harmonious installation.
